Water Hyacinth is a tropical water weed with spongy texture commonly found in rivers and lakes in Southeast Asia. In South Africa it is called Florida Devil or million dollar plant. It grows densely as clumps of some 8 - 10 stems, each with the average length of 60 - 80 centimeters, floating and clogging waterways. For Thailand a lot of public money has been spent every year to eradicate water hyacinth but could not keep pace with its rapid growth resulting with water pollution.

In order to give proper incentive for villagers along rivers and lakes in Thailand to actively participate in cleaning their water it is necessary to turn this weed into income generating material. With several trials and errors finally in 1986 water hyacinth has been proved to be a great new environmental friendly material for furniture. At the hands of creative artists water hyacinth furniture is truly an object of art and beauty. Its simplicity and natural look including its delicate texture have drawn the interests of many interior designers and decorators all over the world.
